Grinding always left coffee grounds next to the portafilter, and that bugged me. So first I bought a cool magnetic funnel, but I couldn't tamp through it. Take it off, tamp, and there goes the coffee again. So I built my own. This one comes in 58 mm, for Gaggia and La Marzocco. Put it on, turn it clockwise, it sits. You can tamp straight through it.

The Workflow
No coffee grounds on the counter.
The funnel grips the bayonet lugs of your portafilter with two opposing slots. Set it on, twist clockwise, it sits tight. The ground coffee runs entirely into the basket.
The narrowest point of the opening measures 60.0 mm. A 58 mm tamper fits through, so you tamp straight through the funnel without taking it off. With the common magnetic funnels that is exactly what you can't do.
The Seat
A groove for the basket rim.
The top rim of a filter basket isn't flat, it's rolled into a half-round. Funnels with a flat seat therefore rest on a curve, and a gap is left in between.
The seat of this funnel has a groove with a 2.8 mm radius that follows the rim instead. It sits on the curve, not beside it. What we measured is the shape, not the amount of coffee: nobody counted how much stays behind, so there's no number here.
The Fit
Two portafilters measured, others not.
Gaggia: Baby, Carezza, Classic, Espresso, Deluxe, Evolution, New Baby, Baby06, Baby Dosata, New Espresso 06. And La Marzocco. Both portafilters are on the table here, the funnel has been set on and twisted, and it sits.
"58 mm" is a nominal size, not a standard. The number describes the filter basket, not the bayonet above it, and that is exactly where manufacturers diverge: the lugs sit in different places, at different widths and different thicknesses. Even our two portafilters differ at the rim by 0.8 mm.
This funnel is not built for the E61 group (Rocket, ECM, Lelit, Profitec, Bezzera, Quick Mill, Rancilio). That's not caution, it's arithmetic: the E61 head rim measures 72.8 mm, our collar bore 72.2 mm. It will not go over.

Does the funnel fit my machine?
On Gaggia and La Marzocco, yes: we have both portafilters here and the funnel sits on them. On any other 58 mm portafilter we don't know. "58 mm" describes the filter basket, not the bayonet. It is not built for the E61 group, where the head rim at 72.8 mm is wider than our collar bore at 72.2 mm.
Does it fit my Dedica too?
No. The Dedica has a 51 mm portafilter with three tabs. For that there's the 51 mm dosing funnel, the same design one size down.
Can I tamp without taking it off?
Yes, that's what the bayonet is for. The narrowest point of the opening measures 60.0 mm, a 58 mm tamper goes through.
What is the groove in the seat?
The top rim of the filter basket is rolled into a half-round. The groove with a 2.8 mm radius follows that curve instead of resting flat on it. How much less coffee ends up in the gap we have not measured, so we promise nothing about it.
How do I clean it?
Wipe with a damp cloth or rinse briefly under cold water. It's printed from PLA and not dishwasher-safe.
